As we approach the holiday season (unless it’s already upon us) you’re going to want to decorate your place in a way that makes you feel cozy and comfy. One of the best parts of the holiday season is curling up in front of a fireplace and watching a good movie with a cup of hot cocoa in your hand. Maybe you’re big on gathering around the Christmas tree with your family and playing games. Maybe you like to spend the holidays by yourself, quietly, and on your own schedule.

Regardless of how you like to spend your winters, all of us want to reside in a place that’s warm, inviting, and cozy. Maybe you’re the kind of person who invites family and friends to spend the holidays with you, so you need your place to be extra cozy and inviting. If this is the case (or even if it’s not) you’ll want to invest in these five cozy decor items:

1. Wreaths

Whether it’s on your front door, over your fireplace, or on a wall, wreaths bring holiday cheer to any room. You’ll want to tie in the ribbon with some other decor, but putting up a wreath can quickly take your place from “drab” to “fab.” The best part about wreaths is that you can keep them up all year. You might have to switch them out, but wreaths are acceptable during any season!

Consider putting up a wreath on your front door so when people drive by, they know you have spirit. It can really change the look of the front of your place.

2. Throw pillows

You can instantly change a room by changing up your throw pillows on your couches and cozy chairs. When you have your friends over, they’ll want to plop down on your couch for movie night. One of the cheapest ways to cozy up a room is by adding throw pillows to your already-existing furniture.

Even in the guest and master bedrooms, you could consider adding throw pillows. The one thing I’d caution you about is getting too many pillows on a bed at one time. Try to keep it light and airy, otherwise, you’re sure to overwhelm your guests.

3. Fleece blankets

Toss a fleece blanket across your couch and you’ll instantly feel cozier in your place. These are another decor item that you can keep in a rotation all year. You’ll want red and white ones for the holidays, but really fleece blankets never go out of style!

When you have guests, they’ll feel welcome to sit on your furniture and cuddle up with your fleece blankets. You might have trouble getting rid of them!

It’s always nice to keep a basket of blankets in your living room for movie night, just in case your feet get chilly!

4. Rugs

Whether you decide to buy area rugs or smaller rugs, adding decor to your floor will instantly cozy-up your place. You’ll be more comfortable walking around in bare feet with your morning coffee and it’ll brighten up your space. You’ll feel like you’ve rearranged all of your furniture when you’ve really only added a rug.

The best advice I ever got on rug-buying was not to buy one with light colors in it. It’s easier to keep dark-colored rugs cleaner because it’s harder to notice bits of dust and dirt.

If you decide to go with rugs instead of keeping your hardwood floors, realize that at some point you’re going to have to get them cleaned, which is quite expensive, but it comes with the territory of having rugs in your home.

5. Music and scents

Before you start spending all kinds of money on things that you’ll hope will make your place cozier, consider lighting a few candles and playing your favorite album. Visitors are more likely to enjoy their stay when you have a warm scent filling your house and music playing in the background. People are instantly more relaxed by smells and sounds. So it’s definitely something to consider.
